Business Details
We are a seasoned architectural practice with a professional journey that began in 1982. Our founder, James M. Vanderheyden, established this firm after earning a Master of Architecture Degree with Honors from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1977. We received international recognition early on, securing one of eight awards in the prestigious 1976 William Van Allen Architect Memorial International Design Competition. Our professional licensure was achieved in 1981 following a rigorous internship with a respected Chicago firm. We have successfully guided clients through the design process for over four decades.
Our portfolio is a testament to our dedication, encompassing over 400 completed projects worldwide. We have delivered more than 200 projects in Oak Park and River Forest alone, earning awards from the Oak Park Historic Preservation Commission. Our work has been prominently featured in the Parenthesis Kitchen Walks and a 2010 publication of Kitchen Trend magazine. We believe that good architecture inspires achievement and excellence. We remain committed to providing the highest level of professional integrity and quality in design and planning throughout the entire Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Services
Residential Addition & Renovation Work
Our primary focus is transforming existing homes through thoughtful additions and comprehensive renovations. We guide homeowners step-by-step through the design process, translating their specific concepts into a plan that works beautifully for their family. The final result is a new space that fits seamlessly with the original home and neighborhood character, often making it impossible to tell where the old ends and the new begins.
Commercial Projects
We apply our extensive architectural expertise to commercial ventures, bringing the same level of quality and professional integrity found in our residential work. Our portfolio includes a diverse range of non-residential designs, executed with the philosophy that good architecture inspires achievement. This service extends our reach beyond homes, contributing to the broader built environment with functional and inspiring spaces.
Architectural Design & Planning
We believe the process of architectural design is a collaborative journey, and we walk that path with our clients step by step. Our approach challenges clients to see new possibilities and think about elements they might never have considered. This professional guidance ensures a product that is uniquely their own, built on a foundation of careful planning and shared experience that binds us forever.
