I have been fortunate to hone my skills under recognized local master architects. Overlooking the Skagit Valley near Little Mountain this home was primarily designed to provide garden spaces for the longtime owner of Bellevue's famed Wells Medina Nursery.
The garden was at the forefront of the design.
In fact we were asked for a garden with a house in it, not a house with a garden around it.
The walled-in garden creates an outdoor room.
A steel grated fence divides the walled garden in half, providing privacy from the general public as they enter and reducing the formal garden to a manageable size.

This is an odd one.
The initial architect went out of business leaving an unfinished shell.
At first, we were called in mid-construction to simply figure out how to side the existing building.
That lead to a significant reorganization inside to make the most of the newly existing windows and skylights.
A giant island was substituted for wall cabinetry in order to play the kitchen down while providing a great deal of storage.

Big fireplaces to take the chill of snowy winters; sliding glass walls for cooling summer breezes.
The lodge is comprised of a small grouping of buildings, a central living building with sleeping building on either end.
Two entrance buildings connect the three primary buildings providing horizontal and vertical circulation.
The steeply sloped roofs are oriented to conveniently locate the typically heavy snowfall away from the entries and exterior windows.

The house is cleverly layered, the fireplace forming a plane in front of the glass doors, and wall angles stopping just short of where you'd expect them to meet.
Simple yet complex, plain yet complicated, subtle yet arresting.
While lines between the indoors and out are skillfully blurred, in one aspect that transition is emphasized.
The home's dark exterior is thrown into relief by a brilliant interior, not unlike walking from a shadowy room out into the light, except in reverse.

Arroyo Residence

Located in the Spanish Valley near Moab, Utah this relatively inexpensive new home is a direct response to the sun, a nearby arroyo and the ever present rim wall.
The master suite is separated from the guest rooms by a sizable living, dining, kitchen area which is oriented toward the sun.
The concrete floor inside extends outside to connect the interior and exterior spaces.
A large roof overhang projects over the terrace protecting the interior spaces from excessive sunlight and heat.
Concrete floors are radiantly heated and provide a thermal mass to passively keep the house cool during the day.
