Business Details
We are Nelson J Mark, a licensed architectural practice based in Missoula, Montana, holding both AIA and NCARB credentials to validate our professional expertise. We specialize exclusively in traditional residential and resort architecture, with deep, hands-on experience delivering custom design solutions for a range of project types. Our core service offerings include full design for new traditional properties, sensitive renovations of existing high-quality historic structures, and transformative upgrades of ordinary existing spaces into traditional masterpieces, often with a design intent that references historic architectural character. We prioritize genuine, heartfelt design that resonates with clients, rejecting generic, anonymous building designs in favor of unique, personalized spaces that reflect the identity and dreams of the people who will use them. Our design process is rooted in time-honored, client-focused methods: we begin by listening to your goals, wishes, and vision for your space, then translate those ideas into hand-drawn schematic sketches in plan and elevation to visualize the proposed design. These hand-drawn sketches serve as the foundational framework for all subsequent technical and construction drawings, embedding core design intent to guide every step of the project buildout. We draw inspiration from a wide range of classic, enduring architectural styles, including Colonial Revival, Georgian, Classical and Greek Revival, Period French, Italian, Mediterranean and English, Spanish Colonial and Mission, Neo-Classical and Beaux Arts, Victorian, Queen Anne, and American Arts and Crafts interpretations such as Shingle Style, Craftsman, Adirondack Camp, and Rocky Mountain Rustic.
Every traditional design we create is built to four core pillars: sustainability, so our designs look and function as if they have stood for generations and are built to last for generations more; comfort, with site-specific orientation, natural material selections, and climate-appropriate design to support occupant well-being year-round. Efficiency is also central to our work, as we combine cutting-edge energy and resource-efficient technologies with simple traditional building practices to deliver the best of historic design wisdom and modern performance. We hold beauty as a non-negotiable standard for every project, as well-designed traditional spaces foster a shared sense of peace, place, and connection that few other design approaches can achieve. Our team works across rural, town, and city settings across the country, delivering consistent, high-quality traditional architecture for both private home clients and hospitality resort operators.
